We’ve known that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with Alexander Woo, are adapting Cixin Liu’s sci-fi series, The Three-Body Problem, for almost three years. Today, however, is the first time we’ve seen anything from the show, Weiss and Benioff’s first project since Game of Thrones ended.
Based on the teaser, which was released during the streamer’s TUDUM event today, it’s clear that Netflix is sparing no expense with the production, which goes by the slightly modified title of 3 Body Problem. “The unknown troubles us,” someone says in the clip, which gives us a montage of key moments from the book, including what goes on in that VR simulation and a glimpse of what the extraterrestrials who get in touch with Earth look like.
Here’s the synopsis from Netflix:
A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time to a group of brilliant scientists in the present day. As the laws of nature unravel before their eyes, five former colleagues reunite to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.
3 Body Problem stars Jess Hong, Benedict Wong, Eiza González, Jovan Adepo, Alex Sharp, John Bradley, Saamer Usmani, Liam Cunningham, Rosalind Chao, Jonathan Pryce, Marlo Kelly, Sea Shimooka, Ben Schnetzer, and Zine Tseng. It’s executive produced by a lot of folks, including Bernadette Caulfield, Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman, Nena Rodrigue, Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner, Dede Gardner, Rosamund Pike, Robie Uniacke, Lin Qi, Zhao Jilong, Fenfen Xu, and Xiasong Ga.
The trailer also reveals that we’ll see the eight-episode series on Netflix sometime in January 2024.
